Why has nobody mentioned cutting weight? My 99 is in a good state of tune and alignment and gets 19.5 mpg highway. I am trying to cut 2000 lbs out of her as a goal. These trucks are ridiculously heavy - no excuse to be over 3600 lbs and they are way over 5000.
Whats the most weight you can remove from a 4WD Tahoe. My 99 is an absolute pig. Had no idea until I rolled across a scale just how heavy it is. That would explain the sorry mpg. I've already removed the spare and jack, the tow hitch, both running boards, roof racks. I've also gone through and...
Well there appears to be type of electrical solenoid that does the locking of the gear shifter. I know this because if you disconnect the battery and have the engine off, the column will shift from park without depressing the brake. Something in there energizes a lock and it must be sticking on...
Bought a 99 with no radio, so I looking at finding an original stock unit number 16265855, or upgrading to something else. What later model radios will fit with no mods to the dash or wiring if any? Will 2000 to 2006 fit, or even 2007 and up? Thanks,
Paul
I have 2 99 Tahoes. One has the stuck in park issue on another post. This one has a vacuum noise coming from behind the dash. Seems to fluctuate with engine vacuum. Sounds exactly like an old Qjet at idle with the air cleaner off. It is very annoying. I have disconnected everything trying to...
My 99 will refuse to shift from park on occasion. Regardless of ambient temp, on a hill or flat, doesn't matter. And when it does get stuck there is absolutely nothing you can kick, shake, or punch that will release the electric brake locking mechanism to allow the shifter to move. What is wrong...
Just replaced the engine in my '99 Tahoe and I am noticing an audible vacuum or sucking sound in the cabin when radio and ventilation systems are off. Only when engine is running too. Seems to increase and decrease in tune with engine manifold vacuum situations. i.e. louder off throttle, goes...
Found to be the rear roller bearing totally shot. Not really much in that case is there, pretty simple design.
Stupid me, tried to take the transfer case cover off in the truck first. Ha! That sucker won't come off in the car, that left me taking out a case already split open and dumping all...
Found at least 1 major issue once I dug deeper. The rear bearing in the transfer case was totally shot. The 7 ball bearings all looked like they had been shotpeened! Dealer only item cost me $75 plus $10 for the transfer case-to-transmission adaptor gasket plus $16 for 2 qts of the autotracII...
Well I now have the NP246 transfer case out of my 99 and apart. Looks very clean inside, nothing obviously worn or loose or broken, even the C clip. Fluid was Dex 3 and not the blue stuff. What then is the clicking noise? Guess I'm gonna button her back up. Any thoughts?

Very very easy IMHO. I did mine a year back and was shocked at how simple it was. Only trouble was the giant hex nut holding the fan on. I had to modify a large wrench to fit. All 4 water pump bolts are a straight on, nothing in the way.
Hello to all....My 4wd Tahoe has had the audible slow speed clicking sound for awhile now. Pretty annoying hearing the sound bouncing off other cars or concrete curbs. I can tell it is very common, but what is it? I have replaced the rear driveshaft universal - not it. Today I dropped the NP246...
