Hello to all....My 4wd Tahoe has had the audible slow speed clicking sound for awhile now. Pretty annoying hearing the sound bouncing off other cars or concrete curbs. I can tell it is very common, but what is it? I have replaced the rear driveshaft universal - not it. Today I dropped the NP246 transfer case out and torn it down, and nothing looks a bit wrong in there. Never driven too fast in 4 lo and don't even use the 4wd but a couple times a year. Can that chain get so loose it drags the case body - I don't see any marks though.

By the way I did not see the famous broken snap rings, where should I be looking? Thanks,
Paul

Found at least 1 major issue once I dug deeper. The rear bearing in the transfer case was totally shot. The 7 ball bearings all looked like they had been shotpeened! Dealer only item cost me $75 plus $10 for the transfer case-to-transmission adaptor gasket plus $16 for 2 qts of the autotracII fluid. Not bad....

Learned my lesson though, I took the whole torsion bar system out to give access to removing the transfer case and the dealer told me I was crazy and the transfer case will come out with all that left in-place. Doesn't look it to me though.

So far so good. If I still hear the click I'll do the front shaft universal next.
