That's where your dilythium crystals go. You know, for your warp drive. lol.

Actually, I have no clue what that is. But I can see why you are asking. Do you have any pics with better detail?

(Dilythium Crystal Hyper Drive Unit) has been grey since i got it. ive only had it about a week and a half. im baffled. but now that no one knows WTF it is i really want to know what it is.

This is the gerbil wheel access panel. Every 300K miles, you need to take it in and have the gerbils replaced. The GMT800 relocated this in front of the firewall in the engine compartment next to the master cylinder and upgraded the gerbils to hamsters. Same for GMT900, except now the hamsters are tied into the alternator. I hear you have to replace them every 100K miles in the GMT900; once you catch a wiff of the electrical arc / singed furr smell, the Service Rodents Soon DIC message is displayed. I think you're okay even on the '99s unless you get a "Service Rodents Soon" message.

that is the access panel for the air bag under it i believe

no offense but i dont think thats what its for. if so they couldve done a better job at concealing it. you know.

does it have 2 locks on the sides of it or something? can't tell from the picture.

nope theyre phillips head screws. i might take them off just to see whats under it. i just cant think of what it might really be.

its was nice of you to spend you time typing all that. but if its not the D.C.H.D.U. its nothin. LOL. i ran through all of my RPO codes and theres not anything about a SRS message. so im guessin it didnt come OEM with that. i wish though. LOL.

honestly theres no one on here that might know what it is? the airbag thing could be right but siriously why would they make it so obvious. there had to be something there before. maybe a Oh $h!? handle or something. i know ive seen a Z71 with a bar up on the dash in that area. maybe thats what it is. i donno. but thats all for the help.

Hey,

It's not factory whatever it is. GM has done some dumb things, but no way would they put that gray plastic on a red dash.

Attached is a picture from my 98 Z71 truck. It's a smooth dimple and looks like it is molded in the plastic that way. There's nothing to remove. I'm pretty sure this is how yours looks under that gray thing.

They added the dashboard oh-crap handles on the 2000 Tahoe.

"DEALERS WILL INSTALL A TRAY INSERT ON THE TOP OF THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE TRAY INSERT CORRECTS THE NONCOMPLIANCE."

how the hell does that "correct the noncompliance"?
