This is the gerbil wheel access panel. Every 300K miles, you need to take it in and have the gerbils replaced. The GMT800 relocated this in front of the firewall in the engine compartment next to the master cylinder and upgraded the gerbils to hamsters. Same for GMT900, except now the hamsters are tied into the alternator. I hear you have to replace them every 100K miles in the GMT900; once you catch a wiff of the electrical arc / singed furr smell, the Service Rodents Soon DIC message is displayed. I think you're okay even on the '99s unless you get a "Service Rodents Soon" message.
it was safety campaign that was dealer installed but only with the customer approval it didnt have to be done. I did only one at work but most people didnt want it done. i dont remember specifics.
