i wouldnt recommend any one trying this with little experience or with no heart to cut up their truck.... haha

the parts in yellow will be fiber glassed together, I will have to repaint the grey part with a different paint, I'm gonna keep the "black wood" there

clears the vents.. there is a good amount of room back there after you pull out the mounting pocket for the hvac and factory radio and trim it, also had to trim the dash opening behind the bezel.. had the whole top of the dash off all my wires are up on top..

took the bottom off of the factory radio and riveted it to the sleeve of the double din and it still clips in with factory clips and in the factory position.. just not completely happy with how the dash bezel looks which is why i will be fiber glassing

a tahoe or yukon would be much easier but the denali bezel has a round over edge up to the radio..

definately will.. i dont even know that a "pro" shop would tackle this too many different ways of doing it and what the end result could be..

if they would do it i would expect it to be very expensive

not to burst your bubble but the shop that I go to has done many of these but they just buy the '03+ dash bezel that comes with a double din pocket.

I give you major props for the DIY though!! Just clean it up a bit and it's all cherry!

that route you still have to mod the HVAC section, and a tahoe/yukon bezel is already 400$+ so i cant find or imagine what the Denali one costs. I work at a dealer ship and we got an 04 denali in they let me test it out because that was the route i was gonna go.. didnt fit everything the right way... very small differences that arent enough to notice with out them side by side (in the denali) not sure about the hoe's

You can't install the 03+ bezels in the pre-03 models without modification. The HVAC controls sit lower in the 03+ models. It's just as much work to mod a newer bezel to fit an older model as it is to just mod the existing one.
energ, be sure to post some finished pics when you get a chance. Looking good so far.

Here's a step by step install of a double din unit AND the '03+ bezel in an '02 Avalanche:

http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/topic,46758.0.html

Not hard, and it's basically just shifting the climate control cluster a bit so it's in the right place with the '03 bezel.

The end result looks great, and instantly cleaner than any cutting & fabbing with the '02 and earlier bezel and a double din unit.

expensive route. 300+ for the dash bezel
and as stated the DENALI bezel has beveled (or rounded) edges up to the radio and HVAC controls and would not work either way the openings are still wider, then you are stuck with a hole twice the size of the original OnStar opening where the button is..

It isn't cheap, and I see the Onstar button issue (I assume, again, you could just swap in the larger Onstar pod from a Chevy/GMC model IF it isn't already that large and just hidden), and the edges around the radio & HVAC don't exactly matter--things behind line up, regardless. It's just getting the radio & HVAC in the correct position to match vertically, and all looks perfect from the front.

As someone else said, this is how some shops actually do it, basically because with a few "behind the scenes" mods, the front looks clean and stock with no trimming, etc. Worth it to me, and really not the issues, I think, you brought up.

But I've not done it, just known people who have and seen different jobs online. It's either cutting and fabbing your stock bezel or moving things slightly behind and using the newer bezel, essentially. All depends.

But look at it like this. You have the cost of the bezel, the cost of modifying to relocate the hvac, and the then the cost of the nav install itself. If you just modify the existing panel, you don't have to spend the bucks on a new bezel and the time to refit the hvac, which you do have to do. I've went that route several times with customers who opted to go that way. But modifying the original bezel can be made to look good, and doesn't have to cost much in terms of labor. It only takes me about a couple hours to mod the bezel plus drying time when refinishing. Labor usually only runs about $250 to mod the bezel plus the cost of the nav install. If you opt to use an 03+ bezel, you're looking $300+ for the bezel, plus the cost of moving the hvac, and then the unit installation cost. Of course, if you don't know anyone or anyplace that you can trust to make the existing bezel look good, then it may make you feel better to spend the extra money.
