your right because i only replaced 5 qts. i used some of the lucas tranny oil stuff and i dont know if it was that or my tranny oilreally needed to be replaced but when i had it changed the color was very dark. i know that lucas stuff is dark but my old oil came out lookin more of a dark purple. so theres no drain plug or another easy way to drain it. i had it done for only $30 and brought my own fluid so i guess i can have my mechanic do it again but i dont know when i should do it.


Look for my post with the RP reps comments. He gave a suggested time to change more fluid after the original pan drop. I think it was like 5K miles. By doing another pan drop at that point you get a higher concentration of the new fluid.

ok cool, is it true that when usind rp you dont really have to get all the old fluid out because rp is suppose to overpower the old oil?

That's what the RP rep told me. His reply is in one of my posts. I'm kinda busy right now or I'd try to find it. If you have the time do an advanced search for my username and I'm sure you can find it.

So, to consolidate, it's mandatory to drain all 15 or so quarts from the transmission system, but not by flushing or using pressure. Then it's better to use synthetic oil as a replacement because it breaks down slower and has better temperature control. Am I getting that right? Thanks

If I'd just done a pan drop I would have used the RP, it would help sweeten up the old tranny fluid more than regular fluid. Where I had a tranny failure and therefore a complete rebuild all the fluid had to be replaced. At that point I went with OEM fluid because it would all be fresh and new and besides, I can't afford that much RP.

I've also read that I should stay with the GM brand oils and fluids but there isn't any factual information to support the reasoning.

This is true as far as the transfer case goes - you absolutely need to use GM AutoTrac II fluid in the T-case as it's the only thing on the market that meets the GM specs. Other than that, as long as it meets/exceeds the OEM specifications, you're fine.

OK then, unlike the GM Dex-cool, the GM oil for the transfer case and transmission is a good product and well priced. That's it for me then. Thanks for all of your input and advice and have a great holiday season.

Just the T-case needs the AutoTrak fluid. Use whatever you please in the transmission as long as it meets specs. :thumbsup:
