i have alot of questions about my 99 Yukon and im sorry if i become a pain. but i was wondering is there anyway to tell if my truck has keyless entry. i bought it used and as far as keys go all i got was one that was made at walmart or something. is there a certain code in the glove box, a fuse, anything that could tell me. i have noticed when i turn the ignition and all the lights cut on in the dash a "security" light pops on. this maybe a dealership thing. but i just want to get a little help on it. also if it is, how much would it be to get a new key fob or whatever theyre called? or would i have to get a whole new system? im sure they could just pull the codes and order me a new key ring thing.

thanks for the help.

I had this exact question back in August when I bought my 97 Tahoe. Try the following...

I think the 99 is the same as my 97. You can tell quickly if you have the keyless entry system and if it works. Locate the OBD II data link connector just below the steering wheel on the bottom of the dash. Looking at the connector, you will see that there are two rows of pins. You are intested in the top row only. The pins are numbered from the left across to the right, one through eight. Find pins four and eight.

To enter programming mode for the RKE system, short across pins four and eight with a bent paperclip or something similar. Be sure you get the right pins. If the vehicle has the RKE system installed and working, when you short across, the doors locks will cycle (meaning you have keyless). To exit programming mode, just remove the shorting wire.

Here's where I got mine...

http://www.originalkeyless.com/product.sc?categoryId=11&productId=1136

They forgot to add the instructions to my order, but here they are in case you need them:

Transmitter Programming
If they key is in the ON position during the programming procedure, the horn chirp will be disabled, if the key is in the OFF position, the horn chirp will be enabled. The horn will chirp when the lock button is pressed two times.

When reprogramming the remote control door lock reciever, All transmitters must be programmed at this time in order for the transmitters to operate the vehicle. Transmitters not programed at this time will not work and the procedure will have to be redone with all the transmitters.

Ground pin 4 to pin 8 of the data link connector (DLC). The receiver will respond by locking and unlocking the doors, and activating the liftgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds.
Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on the first transmitter to be programmed until the locks cycle (approximately 10 seconds).
Repeat step 2 for up to four total transmitters to be programmed (if available). The receiver will respond by locking and unlocking the doors and activating the liftgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds.
Remove the ground applied to the DLC.
Lock and unlock the doors in order to verify the transmitter operation.
Activate the rear window release in order to verify the transmitter operation.

By "alarm" they are probably asking if you have an aftermarket alarm system. If everything is stock, I think you'll be fine.

thanks for the help man. there are 2 different remotes. ones has an unlock, lock, and rear window opener button. the other has all these and a panic button. so does it matter or what?:confused2:

I don't have one with the panic button, and I don't know if it will work for you or not. Just to be safe, I'd get the one without it.

I looked an at online owner's manual for a 1999 Tahoe and didn't see the Panic button discussed in the keyless entry section.

The "Security" light on your dash is for the PassLock system. This is a passive security system that only allows the ignition to crank with a "valid key" as opposed to a screwdriver I suppose.

I don't think the Panic button was stock and would go with the one with Lock, Unlock and Rear.

this may be a stupid question, but if i change the batteries in my remote will i have to reprogram it to the truck?

(i wouldn't think so, it would be the same as being out of range or the truck, but i don't want any suprises)

and also, how many remotes can you have on one vehicle. (i only recieved one from the dealer and would like to have a spare) when i load the second one, do i have to reload the first one as well?

I dont think changing the batteries would matter. You can have up to 4 remotes. And yes, from what ive read if you add a new one you have to redo the old one also. If im wrong im sure ill be corrected. lol.
