I've been noticing ever since I bought my 04 Yukon a loud pinging noise coming from what seems to be the exhaust. It sounds like normal heat expansion but 2x's as loud. It may just be that, but could it be something else. It only does it after the truck has run for a little bit. My other ? is, are mufflers suppose to have some sort of hole in them to drain out any moisture or is my dealer just giving me a rash of ****? I thought maybe the hole and the noise have something to do with each other? If anyone could give me some info/knowledge on this it would be awesome. That way I can either tell the tech at the dealer to shove it or just say thanks.

There is an TSB on this issue what it is that the muffler needs a new heat shield added to the outside on the muffler . If you need the TSB on it I can dig it up and post it for you :)

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2006 and 2007 (Classic Only) model years and the 5.3L (L33) engine. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-06-05-008C (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Condition

Some customers may comment on a popping/snapping noise from underneath the vehicle at idle or immediately after the vehicle is shut off. Some popping/snapping noise from the exhaust system during cool down is a normal condition.

The noise may be intermittent depending on the outside temperature and or temperature of the exhaust system at the time of testing.

Cause

As the exhaust system warms and cools, the muffler and the muffler heat shield expand and contract at different rates and may cause a popping and/or snapping noise.

Some popping/snapping noise from the exhaust system during cool down is a normal condition. The customer should be made aware that this service procedure is designed to reduce but not eliminate all exhaust system popping and snapping during cool down.

Correction

Replace with new heat shield and new straps

Part # 15253526 - Heat Shield
three straps, P/N 10391259

Thanks, this will be a huge help. But I'm wondering because it doesn't effect driving, if they will replace it free of charge or not?

It's at the shop now. I gave them the TSB w/no issues. They had to look it up on their own computer. We'll see if they do the repair or not. I'll pick it up later.
