Ok,

So i bought this 97 4x4 tahoe for CHEAP about 2 weeks ago. I just needed something to pull the ATV's when we go mudding or hunting. When we test drove it, it was throwing two codes. 1) Evap leak 2)Crank sensor codes.

my buddy is a pretty good mechanic so we dropped the tank and fixed the evap leak (they installed a new pump and never put a seal between the tank and the big ORing.

so one day it wouldn't start and long story short we figured out that the screws holding the rotor down yanked out and we had to replace the rotor (had to use one size up on the screws).. so yes, we have messed with the cap and rotor.

I then REPLACED the Crank Sensor on the front of the motor (behind the harmonic balancer) thinking that should fix the code..

NOPE !! i can not figure out what it is !! i do not know the exact wording but the code is like "Crank Sensor to Cam Sensor off" something to that nature..

Does ANYBODY Have any ideas ?!

Thanks in advanced ! !

You need a "CASE RELEARN" the sensor at the crank and the cam sensor need to be realigned......

OK so I have found out the distributor needs to be turned.

Miles on the truck say 204k. But when we went to test drive it my mechanic went thru the whole thing. We think the motor was replaced last august. The guy I got it from had bought it from the can academy auction (to help kids I think)... then his brother bought a truck (they were needing one deer lease vehicle) so he used this as a tax write off and needed it gone. Runs amazing and just needs some interior work and the crank sensor code fixed. Oh and we fixed the evap sensor last night. (They installed a new gas tank and pump but didn't put a seal) so we dropped the tank and fixed that.

All in all I paid $1200 for it , clean title (moms a cop and she ran it all) ...

I'll only be using it to pull a 16ft trailer with atvs when we go mudding or hunting.

I'll probably be stupid at some point and take the Tahoe to get dirty too lol

ok so, the shop called me .. it was 48 deg off from 0 .. now it's 8 deg.. the code is gone for now so it passed inspection.. BUT i can't get it to 0 unless i get a whole new distibutor and everything... (the one on it is jerry rigged from previous owner) ..

my question is ... will it hurt anything running it like that? it ran just fine before.. so now it's WAAAYYY closer to 0 ....

48*? how did you determine that?

There is no way to disable the ECM's control of timing so your reading (assuming you tried to set with a light) is off......

no light... thats not how these work... the scanner's readout showed 48* off... the distributor was turned untill it got to 8* off... since it's all jerry rigged they couldn't turn it any further..

part of it is zip tied ... in the back...

it can't be 180 deg off cuz it runs great... i was j/w if running it 8* off is going to hurt anything ....

Nice on the zip ties, the 180* off is the gear being pinnd to the shaft 180* off which since odd number of teeth puts the timing off...... Just saying if it has been replaced then it could have been installed to the distributor backwards even with the distributor installed right this would throw the timing off 1/2 a tooth....

couldn't afford the $300 for a new one and to have it installed so..

but it's not throwing any codes now
