Question: this chevy dealership is trying to charge me $152 to get a new key and program it. I searched the forum to see if i can find anything on How To program a key. Can anyone help me out? Cant i just buy a key and get it cut for a small fee and program it myself? im assuming there is no special tool to do this?

from what i recall... the keys are made up of different materials to make up X amount of resistance when voltage is passed through them. This resistance is read when the key is entered into the ignition switch and is part of the security package (if the key doesnt match the resistance programed in, truck wont start).

So, you cannot just get a regular key made for it.

The FOB is a different story. I believe their are ways to program that yourself.

living in key west isn't the easiest place to get multible dealers. we have one. and the next one is 200 miles away in miami. but i did call and they said it will be $41 for the key and the cutitng, and that i can program it myself. but i dont have much time to travel up there. so im going to see if i can get it shipped here. but the parts guy said its harder to explain to program the key then to just come in and do it.

I lost a key and FOB and had a locksmith make a key and program the key to my vehicle which was a simple task. The cost was less than $25.00. I have yet to replace the FOB as those things are just to expensive to just leave laying around as a spare.

Well, now you have a more reasonable quote and can call back the first dealer and ask them what they are trying to pull.

i've see a few keys and program instructions on ebay. If you get a key make, be sure it works.


I remember when these chip key 1st came out a while back, a guy I know decided that the dealer wanted too much for a replacement key. So he went to a nearby locksmith and had them dub the key. The key did unlock the doors and start his truck. But when he backed out of his driveway and tried to drive off...the truck shut down right in the middle of the street and would not restart.

He ended up having to reset the computer by using both of the original chipped keys.

you can program a new key yourself.....just insert an already programmed key..... turn key on (eng. off)....remove key, insert new key, turn ign. on (eng. off)...new key learned. that's all there is to it.

This is good info....I just ordered a key (plus sign on it for my vehicle) and wanted to find out how easy it is to get programmed. Thank you.
