So I think my bearings are going bad. I have just started to get a humming/whiring from my front end. It happens the loudest around 30mph but you can hear it most of the time. Also more when I turn right and press on the gas to maintain speed. What do you guys think? Wheel bearings or something else with the front end. Thanks guys!

I just changed right bearing. I noticed it more when I turned one way more than the other. I dont remember speed making much of a difference. Whine sounds like a rear end going out. I can tell you on mu 04 hoe, I needed a 36 mm socket to take center hub nut off. I had to go buy one from Oreillys, well rent it then return it.

These are prone to that. All of mine have had new bearings on at least one side.

could be the carrier pinion in the front diff. mine would make a whining noise while driving and it would get worse if i would lightly feather the gas pedal.

That carrier pinion kinda sounds like whats going on. when I speed up it gets louder then when I coast it dies off. Is that hard to replace? Or expensive? Thanks for the replies guys!

luckily mine was under warranty when mine failed. took them 3 times to fix it correctly.

the noise wouldn't start until the truck heated up.

i think it might be something for the dealer or a good mechanic.

Yeah thats what I was figuring. Takes me 10 hours and them 10 minutes probably! Mine does it whenever. Cold or hot so I dunno. Guess I will have to replace a few things and see if it works. Thanks!

Good be as easy as tires. If your tires are "cupped or feathered" then your tire will make a humming noise when driving. Also make sure that your wheel is not loose. A loose wheel can cause noise as well. Run your hand across the tread of the tires and feel for a wavy type tread. This will indicate cupped tires

Try to wriggle the wheels by grabbing the top ond pull and push back and forth. If the wheel is loose with all the lugs tight it probably is the bearing.

Sounds similar to when my wheel hub went out, but the carrier pinion would make sense also. You can't just replace the bearing in these like you could with older trucks, you have to replace the whole hub assembly. It was pretty easy to do, but if I remember correctly, the part was a few hundred dollars. You could jack it up and try spinning each tire to see if it makes the humming noise. If you're down next to the tire, it should be pretty apparent judging by the noise whether it's a bearing or not.

Thanks for all the info guys. That sucks that you cant just replace the bearings. I bet that whole hub piece can be a bit expensive. My mechanic isnt around right now so ill probably wait till next week if i cant figure it out myself

No problem. It does suck though that you can't just replace the bearing, but like I said, it's really very simple. I bought mine from O'Reilly's and was out the door for under $200. The only snag I had was one of the bolts that held the caliper in place wouldn't seat correctly during reassembly for some reason and it took a while to get it right without crossthreading the hole. Other than that, pretty straight forward.
