2016 Radio audio controls stop working

From time to time, I cannot access my radio volume. It happens right after my phone pairs by bluetooth. Only "phone volume" is available at that point.

How do you easily switch back to the radio volume control? The only way I have figured out so far is to go to the Home screen, click on On-Star and then cancel. Maybe I need a software update... not sure.
