what should i use to remove the gasket material?

i am always scared to remove the gasket material from aluminum parts (tranny filter gasket) and weas wondering what would be a good thing to use to ease my mind?

Try a plastic scraper to get most of it off or a razor blade (as flat as you can to prevent gouging) ,scrub off the excess some with a scotch brite pad and clean with acetone.

Razor blade will be easiest. Like Riviera said, make sure you flatten out the blade so you dont gouge the aluminum.
