Your tahoe should have came with a sticker attached to the glove box with a description of the mileage differences between "normal" gas and ethanol.

Your mileage is worse using ethanol. Probably close to 2X worse than with normal gas (I'm sure someone here knows the exact numbers). But the ethanol is better for the environment.

It all depends on if the extra $ you spend on ethanol is worth it to you for a "Safer" environment.

Myself? I use mid-grade "normal" gas.

I think it is closer to a 25% loss. There are some threads already on this subject where users have posted their numbers. Try the search tool to find them.

Thanks for the info, I will probably fill up with the E85 and give it a try and see what it does. Thanks again for the input.

Both of the Tahoes I have right now (my wifes '08 Z71 and my '04 LT) have the 3.43 gear ratio, so they are a little more sluggish but they get awesome gas mileage. The 2004 (33k miles) averages about 19.5 highway and 14 city and the Z71 (7k miles) averages like 18.9 highway and 14 city.

I used to do the miles vs gallons, but whenever I did it, the computer matched up exactly, the most it was ever off was .1 gal.

That being said, the 2003 Z71 4x4 my wife traded for her 2008 had the 3.73 gear ratio and it was a little bit quicker, but it never got over 17.5 highway and was usually around 12-13 city. Theres quite a difference in MPG between the two.

I get about 16.3 with 87 octane.

The last time I used E85 I made a longish trip across the PA turnpike but finished the last 1/4 tank under normal, mostly town, mileage. That tank was 15.3 - due to the trip suppose. But most people get about 80% efficiency (or 13 mpg for me)

A good way to decide is to figure it is about 20% as efficient. So take 80% of gas price and that is your break even point.

My current pricing is...

$3.19 (for 87 octane) X .80 = $2.55

If E85 is $2.55 I will get the same mile per dollar as gas and the satisfaction of using 15% crude oil.
