I have a 99 Tahoe with 120k on it, super nice truck been well taken care of
Few weeks ago I have a weird buzzing king of sound, thought it was a wheel bearing, so I took it in to the shop and they said it needed U joints so I had them but both in the front and rear of the drive shaft. Got it backed and it clunked like hell when coming to a stop and starting, so I took it back. They said the drive shaft needed grease so they greased the drive shaft and the clunking stopped for about a week. Now its back, bad as ever and Im pissed. The truck was NOT clunking before and now its driving me nuts. Any idea what the issue may be?

Im going back again on Monday and could really use some education before dealing with them yet again

Thanks in advance

Sounds like it might be a bad new u-joint. Do you get any noise or clunk on acceleration?

Thanks for the reply, I do not get any noise on acceleration. Only when stopping or starting, once is a while it will clunk when shifting from 1st to 2nd but I listen so close I might be hitting a bump when the trans shifts that makes it feel like a clunk too..

Im concerned it may be a sign of a bigger issue like a rear end....

Its torque lock, the front yoke in the transmission is binding on the splines and GM has a TSB on it, you need a very special WAXY grease to put on the splines to make the klunk go away....

Thanks, what is a "TSB"?

Is this common? My service place seems like they are at a loss.

Thanks for the reply

Can torque lock damage the trans/rear end if not addressed?

TSB is "Technical Service Bulletin", no I don't have the TSB # off hand.

This is very common on our style of trucks, you can use regular grease but it wont last long.

Torque lock isn't horrible, but you can verify that is what it is by pulling the yoke and greasing the splines with some thick grease.

Thanks, you know your stuff! that's just what my dealer said. Had the yoke pulled greased proper and looks good to go, I hope!
