Well first off i wanna say how great it is to have a Tahoe discussion forum online . I just registered today and i want to thank the administrators and whoever contributes to the upkeep of this website. Now my family and i have recently purchased a fully loaded '05 Z71 Tahoe and we all love it!!! As everyone knows gas prices are getting exteremely high. I read over the recent post about simple ways to conserve gas and it left me with the question about tuners and flashers. I have several friends with Duramaxs and they all love theirs. I briefly looked at the product reviews and didnt see alot of reviews for tuners. Anyway i was just wondering what you all think. Is investing in a gas tuner/flasher worth the money and which ones are no joke?? Thanks in advance 05Z71

Welcome!

There are people who have every type of tuner on here. My personal recommendation would be to skip the actual tuners, and get a custom made ECM tune from wait4me or Black Bear Performance. I've heard nothing but good things about both. You're sure to gain at least 15-20hp with one of thier tunes, as well as a whole new level of driveability. The best part? You generally see a 1-2 mpg boost in your fuel economy!

The only disadvantage is that you have to pull your ECM to get the work done, and can't diagnose CEL codes. But, I think the performance is worth it. You can buy a simple scanner if you really want to be able to check codes yourself...I don't think they're all that expensive.

I've been looking into a custom tune myself. I surfed for some feedback on the different custom tuners and actually found several bad experiences with wait4me. Nothing personal, I can't speak from my own experience, it just seemed like several people had issues. The people on LS1 all swear my Nelson tunes. When I can afford it I plan on going with Blackbear. I'm sure Nelson does a great job, but he still just tunes for the specs you tell him. Blackbear actually sends you a cable you hook up to your ride. You plug that into a lap top and drive around for an hour or so while it logs the characteristic of your specific vehicle not a generic vehicle. You then email him the data, he programs a pcm for you and sends it out. Apparantly you often have to do a crank re-learn when you switch pcm's. If you need to with the others you need a friend with the equipment or you need to pay a mechanic. With Blackbear you can do the relearn yourself with the equipment and software he sends you. You pay a deposit on the cable then get it back when you return it. PLUS, he's cheaper than Nelson. Remember, this is all hypothetical for me, I haven't done anything yet, but from my research that is what I've learned and what I plan on doing.

You are correct, sir. With a cable tune you can do your own crank re-learn:yesnod:

Just sent him an email, this flashpaq is pretty decent but I know there is much more power in my lq4. How do you like those aem headers? I couldn't get a part # out of the aem rep and he acted like they didn't sell them.

They fit perfectly, I just threw some Magnaflow cat converters on them and they were good to go. AEM does not make them anymore, which is why there is a limited supply. I bought them through someone that decided not to use em so I didnt have to go through a store. Check around, you might be able to find em elsewhere for cheaper.
