anyone here change out their trans valve body with a rebuilt tcc updated one themselves. Is this something that should be done by a shop only or can it be done by a home wrencher?

i watched a show on tv a little while back (trucks or something ) and they were changing the fluid, filter, and putting in the updated parts to one of these trannys. it didn't seem to be that hard, but i haven't done this myself. (to bad i didn't have a DVR)

i've been thinking about having mine updated when i have the fluid and new filter put in, i'll try to remember to ask my friend who rebuilds trannys what all it takes to do the swap.

I DO NOT RECOMEND IT!!!!!! there are lots of little balls and springs that will fly all over when you pull it down. i here that the only ones that need to be updated are the 96 and 97 years. anything after that already has the updated parts.

valve body

I know it is scary down there, just changing the filter and fluid made me a bit nervous. My Hoe is a '95 so maybe I shouldn't worry about it

do a search for tcc update

u can easily take out the bolts from your tranny pan to change the fluid and filter. the valve body just bolts right up, so if u buy an updated one any home wrencher could do the job in 3 hours or less.

if u wanna just fix yours then take it to a shop that knows of this problem and can fix it.

90% chance they just need to disassemble the valve body and insert a guide for the check ball in the tcc apply pressure valve. then of course replace any gears or clutches that have been toasted by the faulty valve giving to much shift pressure.

i called 3 shops before some guy told me to come buy. he had 3 of my trannys torn apart on the table and showed me the problem first hand. mine was so far gone i had to have it towed to him and rebuilt.

use terms like "4L60e", "P1870 code", "TCC update" with the guy on the phone. if he doesn't immediately know what your talkin about, call someone else. i guarantee somebody in your town has fixed hundreds of these trannys. u just gotta find 'em

dude that fixed mine completely rebuilt my tranny in 2 days. he said it only took him 2-3 hours for assembly/disassembly

thanks for all the info guys

My '95Hoe has 90k miles on it and really the tranny works fine. I do get a bit of a jerky or abrupt shift from 1 to 2nd but no bang or clank. I am considering this tcc update more for preventive purposes but I dont really now if this year has the issues the later models had. I will talk to a dealer to see if a service bulletin was issued for this
