TPS Tire Pressure Sensor Question

Hello, I'm new to the board. This is a great place for info. I have a question, maybe someone can help me with this. I have an 04 Tahoe. I just purchased a set of 08 Tahoe LTZ 5 spoke polished 20" rims. My question is do I need to put my current tire pressure sensors on the new 20's or do I have to buy a new set, or do I even have to put them in at all? And if I don't put them in will the low tire pressure light stay on in my dash cluster? I have been looking at a set of TPS on ebay that came off of an 08 LTZ. Will these work on my 04?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Newer will not work. Must put older ones in, then you will have to do the re learn to get the light out.

Buy another set of for your 20s. This will keep you from having to switch out and will help if you decide to sell your old wheels/tires. The DIC light will stay on if you omit the TPMS.

So basically I have to buy a new set of 04 TPS and put them on my new 20s and have them re calibrated so they will work?Also do you know if the spare Tire/Rim has a TPS?

Typically, spares do NOT have the TPMS in them. The TPMS re-learning process can be done yourself by following instructions in owners' manual.

If you are going from 17s to 20s then the dealer will have to re-program the BCM to know that you're now running 20s. This is for the purpose of speedo, stabilitrac and ABS.

I would check the spare tire to be safe for the sensor not that hard reach up and feel the valve steam. Also if you have the tires put on some where besides the dealership make sure they know there are sensors inside the tires. While working in some of the dealerships I have had a few people come in with tire lights on. They had a tire patched at some mom and pops place or at a tire place that the high school auto shop works at after school and as a result they would also have to buy a new sensor because they broke it 'fixing' the tire. Most places should know about the sensors by now but then again I have seen some of the people working at some of the tire places that don't know what 'white walls in' means.
As for the sensors being re calibrated the computer needs to know what sensor it should be looking for. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I may be mixing GM with Toyota a little bit.

Thank you for all the input. You guys saved me some cash. I was just getting ready to buy a set of 07/08 sensors, but now I'll get a set of 04. I had a 04 SR5 Toyota 4 Runner that had a sensor in the spare. I'll check to see if there's on in my spare. I don't think there is one. 812EnRoute, I've also heard of tire places not realizing there's a sensor and knocking the stem off and damaging it.

Pretty hard not to notice a sensor, if they don't know the difference you shouldn't be taking your truck there for service. Check craigslist and even a local tire shop for a deal on some nbs sensors, you should be able to find some fairly cheap.

What's the best way (short of breaking down the tire) of determining if you have the sensors? I just bought an '04 Z71 to replace my '99 2 door Sport and am trying to figure out all of the gadgets.

If it doesn't have it, can I just add the sensors? I see the light on the dash during the startup cycle.

The Valve stems should be Aluminum with like a aluminum lock down not.Or you can just try letting the air out of one of your tires to see if the light comes on.The newer TPS have a rubber Valve stem yours should be the Aluminum type.
