You probably need tie rod ends, idler arm and pitman arm. How many miles on your truck?

i feel the steering on our trucks is too loose also. when you say theres play, is there play in your steering wheel like 2 inches left to right without the front wheels moving or is your truck hard to keep stright without constant correction?
if its the first issue i would say the steering box if its the second issue i would say pitman arm, idler arm, tierods etc
I recently added 22" rims and am waiting on a steering stabilizer to try to tighten things up

ehh theres only bout 250k miles on it. no idea about maintance history as i bought it at the sheriffs auction. Whats the best way to check the tie rod ends, idler arm and pitman arm to see if they need to be fixed? Also whats that gonna run?

get the front end off the ground jackstands on the frame.start rocking the drivers wheel left to right if it loose then its time to start replacing steering parts. it helps if you have someone to do the rocking and you do a visual inspection look at every joint. pitman and idler arm is a common problem on our trucks parts are not expensive 75-150 but after you replace any component you should get a alignment.also check upper and lower ball joints you can check this by trying to move the 12-6 o'clock (driv&pass)if you get play then replace those also.theres alot of great threads on this site with this issue use the search and im sure you'll be overwhelmed with info.good luck
