It sucks, but I think it has to be done.

I don't have enough income to afford the payment and gas with all other expenses so I am thinking of selling my tahoe. Im a college student and money is already hard to come by.

I want to stick with a truck, the winters here in VT can get nasty and I like to be able to go out even in the worst conditions. Im looking into buying an old K5 blazer or something of that sort. Kind of a beater in terms of condition, but still a rugged reliable vehicle.

Does anyone know anything about the blazers? Any years to look out for, bad or good? Any advice will be appreciated!

It sounds like you're making a smart move...no point in going all into debt over a vehicle.

I've seen decent looking 1992-94 full size Blazers in the $4-6,000 range. Rust seems to be an issue with northern vehicles and you know how that could get expensive. They say the TBI engines are pretty reliable and cheap to fix. Figure a transmission rebuild around 120-140k miles. I'd guess an engine with over 200k may be near the end of its life but there are exceptions.

You don't want to pay $2000 for a junker and have to spend $3000 just to keep it running when you could spend $5000 and have something that will be reliable for a few years. And something you wouldn't be afraid to drive a long distance in.

Check out autotrader.com. For example, here's a 93 K-Blazer that looks like a good deal, well maintained, clean, probably last a while. Hell if I had the money to splurge I'd buy it:

Financing is sometimes an issue with vehicles over 100k miles and a certain year. You could probably talk to a bank about a "personal loan" for a reasonable interest rate.

If you're talking about the 1973-91 version...beats me. You don't see those around too much, but I'd bet you're looking at more frequent repairs. The 87-91 versions had the same TBI 350 as the 92+ so those would probably be preferable. Trying to start a worn out truck with a carburetor in the snow is probably a real pain.

Kinda sucks that you have to do this. Anyhow, I call dibs on your projectors and wheels. Since a dealer will give you scrap for them, I offer to trade my OEM headlights for your headlights and we can come to some sort of agreement on the wheels.

Im also going to look for any of the tahoe/yukon models below 1999. Not sure what the generation is called, but the boxy ones.
