I've got a nasty case of squealing brakes. Its gotten pretty bad within the past week to the point where it needs to be fixed. Is this something that I can do? Or should I bring it to a mechanic? Any hints, tips, ideas?

Thanks, Dan

Well heres the thing,

The previous owner said he had the brake pads and rotors replaced like a month before he sold it. Isn't it true that new pads can squeal as well as old ones? Im going to being it to the shop because I have to have some electrical stuff done as well.

Yes, that is true. We just got brake work done on 3 of our patrol vehicles (06/07 ford explorers), and they sound terrible. Nothing wrong with the work according to the dealership, but since we went with non-OEM parts (admin went the cheap route and took the vehicles to Big O Tire), they squeal. Kinda sounds like a bunch of hooey to me, but what can you do.

Be wary of what the previous owner "says" he did to the truck before he sold it. Just becuase he said so, doesn't make it so. Good luck.

:iagree:

You get what you pay for. Especially when it comes to brakes. My father in law's suburban lasted over 115K miles on the STOCK pads and rotors, from the factory. Blows my mind...he drives like an asshat, too!

Mine are still going strong, although I bought my truck with 82K miles, so I don't really know when the previous owner replaced them, if ever. Haven't had an ounce of trouble though, and I'm at 97XXX miles now. I guess GM did something very well when they designed the brakes on these things.

I bought ceramic pads and good quality rotors from Schmucks and have no problems. Also, for giggles, make sure it's the brakes and not your emergency brakes, mine wore down metal to metal and finally figured it out to the emergency brakes.
