spark plug changing

im new to this forum . does anyone know a good way to get out the #8 (passenger rear) spark plug? have tried 5/8" FLEX SOCKET, straight 5/8" socket, underneath car (no good). that cylinder has 110,000 miles on it and needs the plug changed. all the others i have replaced and put in new plug wires. thanks. vermbird.

not sure about getting it out, but once you do and you go to install the new one, a short piece of rubber hose that fits over the end of the spark plug will make installing it that much easier.

I got under the truck and put the regular socket on around the spark plug first, then popped the socket wrench on the socket then took it out. I also put the new one in from under the truck

Did you get the heatshield off? I had to get under the last denali I changed plugs on to pop the shield with a flathead, then I used an angle socket and it came off easily. Driver's side is usually more difficult, don't forget to use some anti-seize and gap those bishes to .040.

no, i didnt need to get the heat shield off, but i did struggle for a few minutes then I got the socket around the plug and it came right out.

I also want to know as I just got back from the auto shop and they said they want to charge me $214 to exchange out the spark plug???? Um no I will not pay that price.
They also said that I need to get a new water pump and they want to charge $500 for it when I have found them online from $90-$180 so I think we are gonna see about doing ourselves or hire a mechanic on the side to do it.

Also my engine light came on 2 days ago and it has a code of I believe 09 and they said it's one of two things either a intake or a exhaust ring??? And it might run from $300-$500.

do the plugs yourself, its easy all you need is a wrench (and a shop manual might help give you some direction, chilton is a good one that is sold at most auto part shops)

I have had my water pump replaced and it did cost me $500 through the stealership. I would recommend getting an OEM pump through ebay or a part store that sells basically new parts like G&R auto parts their number is 405-634-0575 (they ship). They have lots of parts and I have used them to replace some parts on my car, its usually half what the dealer wants for (just the part) and I have never had any trouble with their parts (air condt. pump and a MAF sensor along with many cosmetic parts). The shop manual will tell you how to replace the pump it shouldn't be too bad, but it might take a while. If you want to save a lot of money do it yourself, and besides then you will have the satisfaction of saying you did it yourself!! haha! But if you dont want to do it yourself buy the pump yourself and have the stealership replace it for you it would still be way cheaper. (you also might want to check and see if you really need to replace the pump, what did they say the reason was? usually they are replaced if they are leaking).

Have somewhere like autozone check the engine code, its free. They will tell you what it means (if not then use the chilton manual, it has a code library in the back). Then decide if you can fix it yourself.

I got mine out just 2 weeks ago. Flex and wobble sockets didn't work. I came in through the top, placed my plug socket on first with a very small extension attached. Once I did that, I attached the wrench and came off pretty easy after that. The small extension was the key for me.

I replaced the plugs in my truck last night with little difficulty, although a specific setup is called for. different people handle it different ways. I had more trouble removing the lead/boot than the actual plug itself.

1/2" drive ratchet
1/2" to 3/8" drive adapter
3/8" drive spark plug socket 5/8

that little adapter for the 3/8 spark plug socket gives you just enough length to both capture the spark plug and clear the manifold, then the 1/2" ratchet provides the leverage required. use your free hand to maintain the central axis of rotation so that you are torqueing in a circular motion instead of pushing/pulling. spark plugs this old should be handled with some caution in mind. I'm always paranoid it will strip out and ruin my life.
