rear radio does not change channels or volume

i have a 2004 tahot 4x4 with the rear radio controls. the radio part itself comes on and shows the channel it is on, but if the kids try and change the volume or station, it doesnt work..any suggestions?

the LED readout has been messed up on my rearward console for a long time...All it shows is a scrambled bunch of letters. Let me know what you come up with..
