Rear axle or just the shaft?

I had a guy look at my right rear tire, and he says the axle is bent. But I see there are axle shafts and then complete axle assemblies. How do I know if the rear axle is truly bent and needs replaced? The space between the axle and drum does vary when the tire is turned...but I want to be sure before I just take some guy's word for it and spend a lot of money. Thanks, y'all! :)

I think it could be either a bent axle ( I would pull it out to be sure) or it could possibly be a bent rim. I would swap out a known good rim and see how it tracks, just to be sure. A bent backing plate may also be a possibility ( I doubt it) but might be good to check that as well. Hope this helps.

The Wheel is a good thought...... but he said "The space between the axle and drum does vary when the tire is turned"
