Does anyone know if I can remove the plug end of a GPS power cord and wire it directly, instead of plugging it into the cigerette lighter.

Most of the portable nav units run off 5V, with the transformer being in the plug. You'll have to use a socket adapter then hardwire it, or solder wires to the end of the plug and hardwire that way.

thanks JK, your a wealth of information. I tore one apart last night and I saw the circuit board/xfrmer. I have to tear out the dash to find out why my rear speakers and sub stopped playing 1st.

if it is 12 volts you can run a relay or even hard wire it with a fuse holder to the battery with simple ring terminals.
