Overall Gearing: '04 1500 Silverado vs. '09 Yukon

One of you number-crunching gearheads may be able to help me out. I'm currently looking at an '09 Yukon with 5.3L, 6 spd, 3.42 rear and I'm wondering how the overall gear ratios would compare to my old 1500 Silverado. that truck was a 5.3L, 4 spd, with whatever gear ratio was common back then (sorry I don't recall).

What I'm trying to determine is how 3rd and 4th gear in my old truck would compare to this Yukon. I absolutely hated how wide the spread was between 3rd and 4th in my old truck. When I would tow my 4,000 lb. trailer, 4th didn't have the torque for even small hills, but 3rd gear had the motor revving so high it was annoying. I'm hoping 4th or 5th in this Yukon would spit the difference between my old truck's 3rd and 4th.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if this helps but this is the gearing for the transmission. The 6spd might shift and hunt for gears more but shouldn't rev as high.

Yeah, I found that info on Wikipedia of all places. It looks like 5th gear in the Yukon would slot in between 3rd and 4th on the older trans.

I don't like the idea of buying a 5.3 again, but the 6 spd should help. Sure wish we could get the VortecMAX 6.0L package in a Yukon. The 6.2L would be nice, but I don't need all the high dollar Denali bling.

IF you get a tahoe you can get a 6.2.


The first and second gears on the 6 speed are equal to 4.10s on a 4 speed.

Buying an LTZ costs about the same as a Denali. that's crazy money if you just want the stronger motor.

Its prolly just be but a stronger motor means everything to me.

You can get a Suburban LT2 with the 6.0 and that may be cheaper then an LTZ tahoe, or a Denali
