To HofB99, I am sure there are some dishonest dealers but i don't think there are many that would risk putting in cheap oil and then on the work order writing mobil 1. The gain would not be worth the risk. I worked in GM dealerships for 12 years and i never saw nor did i hear of anything underhanded like that. Now sales people are another matter.:cool2:

I hear you, Richard, but, these days there are so many dishonest people out there trying to run a scam...makes me sick. But, I do understand what you're saying...and that's why I also offered that maybe it could be done unintentionally... Never know...:rolleyes2:

I have an '04 Tahoe LT and lately when I have paid my service bills, I have noticed that they put 10W-30 oil in it. I use regular oil and bring it to my local Chevy dealer every 3500 miles for all oil changes, so I've wondered if I should ask them about why they are putting 10W-30 instead of 5W-30.

HofB99- it sounds like we have about the same driving style, but I got mine changed 900 miles ago and I am still at 91%. Did you make sure they reset it the last time they changed your oil?

Yeah, I don't know what it is right now... I've driven roughly 2500 miles on this run of oil and I'm already sitting @ 48% :confused2:. And I'm running Mobil 1. Synthetic oil shouldn't degrade @ such an accelerated rate. My driving habits aren't THAT bad! :eek2: Think I'll call the svc tech tomorrow and throw some questions @ him about it...

Just ten days ago (12-11 post #20), you mentioned long idle periods, :( short trips, :eek2: and long warmups. :ack: I'd say that with that in mind, 5K mi on a change would be about right. BTW, the oil life moniter doesn't know what type of oil is being used. ;)

ive never gone by the oil life monitor on all the gm trucks/suvs with it. we usually change it every 3000 with mobil 1 5w30 with a wix filter. and the first change has always been at 2000 which we which over to synthetics. i should hit 2000 on my truck today and im going to try out royal purple and see how it does over our usual mobil 1.

Okay, but I've been "driving poorly" just the same w/ my wife's new Acura TL-S and we've put roughly 350-400 mi on it already in just over a week of owning it, and I've been idling like crazy (learning/setting up things like voice recog, navi, bluetooth, audio/XM, etc...engine running long long time), taking short-FAST-trips (this thing really moves!), and warming it up for no less than 10-15 minutes a pop (unintentionally), and get this...the oil life indicator STILL reads 100%!!! :eek2: NO synthetic put in it yet...5W-20...which is what Acura requires for this model...

Also, you say that the oil monitor doesn't know what type of oil is being used, which is understood, but no matter, the oil should be degrading @ a lesser rate than "normal" oil...is the point I was making... I'm a logical thinking person...48% w/ only 2500 mi doesn't seem to be an accurate indicator for synthetic oil... Which, you just reminded me, I need to call the dealer tomorrow about it... Thanks!

No no, I think you misunderstood. The system doesnt physically moniter the condition of the oil. It looks at your speed, rpms, temp, etc etc etc, and thinks to itself "Hmm, guess that crap needs to be changed." When it starts thinking that, it is thinking in terms of dino oil. It doesnt know that you have synthetic oil in your truck and that it is degrading at a slower pace.

Ahhh-soooo!!! Grasshopper tracking now! :D

Thanks for the explanation. I see what you're saying. It doesn't actually sample the oil to report its degraded state...it simply catalogs what the driver is doing on a daily basis and determines how much of a beating the oil is getting from all this stuff the driver is dishing out (based upon normal oil)... So, am I correct in concluding that if you're running synthetic, the oil monitor is inaccurate in its calculations? You actually have a lot more life in the oil than is being displayed if you're running a higher grade (synthetic) oil...right?

Well, we'll see what happens on the next oil change, but still very peculiar that my wife's oil is already out-lasting mine under the same (if not worse) driving conditions....???:nonod: Been really busy, so I haven't had a chance to call the dealer yet...

A very knowledgeable fellow on another forum recommends changing at 50% w/ regular oil and 0% with synthetic.

And maybe the rice burner's oil monitor is FUBAR.

On the LS1 forums, it was found that 0W-40 was better than 5W-30 because the 40 weight is close to 30, and the 30 was close to 20 weight. For Mobil 1 anyways.
