The new 22 inch wheels I want to purchase have no provison for the TPMS feature on my 07 Z71 Burb. Beside the loss of being able to veiw my tire pressure from the drivers seat, are there any other issues I should be aware of? Has anyone else had TPMS and made the decision to be without it? Did you regret losing the feature? Unfortunately, I have not seen a lot of 22 that I like and I kind of got mentally stuck on these wheels before I realized that the sensors will not install on these wheels.

Thanks for your thoughts.

You'll get a lite or a code if it can't see the TPMSs. You could put them all in a baggy and stuff under the hood or someplace.

Even if you did that you would still get a code, wouldn't you. I am sure when you have 0 pressure at any of the tires you will get a light or code. I haven't tested this theory yet but it doesn't sound like one that would work, unless said bag was able to be pressurized to lets say 30lbs.

Yeah, you're probably right. I meant a really strong, high pressure baggy. :D

When I changed wheels and couldn't get the TPMS reset, I would get a blinking light on the dash and everytime you start the car, you get a message on the DIC so you have to press a button to get the DIC back to mileage (or whatever you prefer), but the warning light on the dash stay on all the time...I can live without TPMS, but I don't want to have to see a warning on the DIC everytime I start the car and a blaring yellow warning symbol on the dash when I drive around...

MCF34,

You made your statement in the past tense. You still driving around with the warning symbol, or did you come up with a solution?

Thanks,

I wonder if the dealer can reset the computer to stop looking for the TPMS altogether:confused:. Can the TPMS function be disabled?

I mean, what happens when you get a flat and need to install the spare? I'm sure the light comes on. Does our spare have a sensor as well that needs to be activated?

Lots of questions here, I'm pretty stuck on these wheels!

Then yes, it will come on..spare does not have TPMS sensor installed. Do you have the stock sensors installed on new wheels? They should have if you told them to....I hear a lot of wheel places won't...the sensors are a couple hundred dollars and will keep them.

Some clarification needs to be made here. I have not purchased any new wheels yet. The ones I want however will not accept the TPMS sensor according to the vender (tirerack.com). Why a sensor will not work in this particular wheel is a mystery to me, but the salesperson said it could be how the wheel was constructed. I love the look of these wheels, so I was trying to get pros and cons of living without TPMS. By the feedback I am getting from the forum however, it is not worth it to drive around with the vehicles DIC going crazy. Besides, wife is primary driver and she would kill me!

I guess I'm going to (reluctantly) look for some other options in a 22 inch size.:cryin: :( :ack:

Interesting that any wheel can not accept the sensors. Every wheel I know of has the same diameter hole for the valve stem. A certain type of valve stem is required, but it looks just like a regular one...the only difference is that it allows the sensor to be mounted to it (the sensor is nothing more than a little black plastic transmitter that is about 1" long x 0.5" thick x 0.5" wide and has a hex head screw to hold it in place on the stem. A 'TPMS sensor stem' and a 'non TPMS sensor stem' look the same to me so I am not sure what the difference is.....

If the new wheels can not use the factory sensors because of the location then they can be attached with a metal band that the sensors will be attached to. It looks like a giant radiator hose clamp. And no it doesn't jack up the balancing in case someone asks :)

Seems strange to me as well, but I suppose I can envison wheel construction whereby the inside part of the rim (backside of the valve stem hole) may be at such an extreme angle or configuation that disallows proper seating of the sensor. Such was the probable explaination according to the salesperson. I wish I could view such a configuation in person, however the Tire Rack representative was unwilling to do any futher investigation beyond what his little computer screen was telling him.

Perhaps I should elevate to a different customer services rep until I can get a more complete answer beyond it "it says here that TMPS won't work with these wheels and I'm sure our techs have tried everything".

I suppose that is true, however, the only problem is that no one can confirm if the 07 Suburban DIC is compatible with that type of sensor. Perhaps this is worth further investigation.

Your continued thoughts and ideas are appreciated!

You would use your factory sensors still with the bands. Do you still have them??? Or are they still on your factory wheels. I just went through this with my 22's 2 weeks ago.

The TPMS system can not be disabled.....and no one will do it for you if it can be done because it is a federal law now. Also to answer the spare reset....it does not have to be reset.

I've never removed my stock sensors because I have yet to even purchase new wheels. So what was the solution you used on your 22's? Were you unable to install the factory sensors through the valve stem and had to go with the bands then? Details please!

The manager at Discount tire didn't know if they would fit or not until he took the wheel off. He showed me the band thing and said that this is an option if they were unable to fit. I was lucky enough that they did fit so I didn't have to use the bands.

I had to do what your gonna have to do and have the stock tires taken off...then remounted so they can take the sensors out. If I were you, just get the wheels you want and either way, a reputable shop will be able to make them work either way.
