Sorry to have out my hand in my very first post, but hopefully you guys can give me some needed insight and direction: I have a 98 Tahoe LT 4x4 navy metallic w/tan leather, all stock with 185k on it. The tranny is going and my mechanic says i am looking at about 2 grand to repair/replace it . The local salvage yard says they can do a rebuilt one installed for about $1300. I am not sure that I want to put any more $$$ in it at this point in its (and my) life b/c I have 5 vehicles, 3 of which are projects. If the body is dent-free, rust-free and the interior is about average (no cracks in the leather, but it shows a lot of wear on the driver's seat), what is it worth in its current condition?

Thank for any help.

MAX

UPDATE: For sale for $995 for two weeks; after that, going to charity. Post forthcoming in classifieds.

what is it worth in its current condition?

depends on where you live.

Around here in NE Ohio, 4 door Tahoe 4x4, late 90's (98/99) are around $3500.00 - $4,000.00 on average. People/Dealers trying to sell for higher aren't moving them.

So...

If they are going for $3,500 -$4k, is $2k a reasonable asking price for mine or would I be asking too much? :confused2:

look at it this way.... can you buy another vehicle for $2k?

I usually go with the 50% rule. if the repair is 50% of the value of the vehicle, then forget it. use the $$ for a down payment on another vehicle.

if the body is in good shape and its still somewhat drivable you should be able to get $2K out of it.

especially if its someone like me who has a freind who does transmissions.

tranny woes...

It is shifting really late and really hard into 2nd; there is no reverse, it's just like neutral. From what I am reading on the net, it looks like it would make more sense to replace the tranny than to try and repair, which is how I arrived at the repair cost. It is driveable, I just dont wanna be in it with my family when it is no longer driveable, so it has been sitting in front of the house for a while as I contemplate fixing.

I think it is over the 50% rule threshhold...:nonod:

PS: Not throwing any codes.

i might be interested in your truck for the right price. i have a truck and car trailer so transportation would not be a problem for me. i am from raleigh nc so the only thing i'm worried about is the bad gas mileage on my truck that i'm gonna get. HAHAHAHAHAHALOLOLOLOLL! anyways, if you would send me a pm with your number i'll call you and see what we could work out. thanks
