I have an 04 Tahoe. She is my baby. I recently went to Midas for what I thought was a break or bearing problem. Boy was I wrong. They told me that their was indications of metal in the rear axle. The lubricant was about a quart low with no indications of a leak in the axle. They topped of the oil for me and sent me on my way. I dont know the full extent of damage yet since I have not had the axle looked at . I have begining to moderate mechanic skills. The thought of trying to fix the problem on my own freaks me out. I have a baby on the way and am anticipating this to be a costly repair. I dont know if buying aftermarket replacement parts would be cheaper than OEM GM parts. I also dont think that a mechanic would let me buy my own parts. Would having a locker installed be cheaper? What are the pros and cons of that? Someone HELP!!

Gonna have to pop the diff cover. Either gonna be ring & pinion gears, pinion/carrier bearings, or spider gears. Problem is, when one of those goes, you usually end up replacing it all. For the cost of all that, yes you could do a locker and parts.

Personally, I can't wait for your scenario. Then I can justify a Detroit Locker with the wife. This is first vehicle I have held off putting one in.

Eaton e-locker and new internals with install kit will set you back $1000 for good stuff, 10 bolts are pretty easy and you could do the install with a manual if you're mechanically inclined.

Yeah, Midas said they couldnt even fix it. They recomended going to a diff shop. The original problem sounded like a ball bearing noise while coasting under 30 MPH. Quality wants 75 dollars to just look at it. I think Im gonna call a couple specialists tomorrow and see if they can give me an estimate.

Just pull the cover and check it out, probably good to change the fluid anyway.
