Can a mass air flow sensor be defective giving the codes P174 and P171 together even though the engine is running very smoothly? No problems at idle or accelerating.

Yes try cleaning it first then clean the throttle body and make sure there are no air leaks

Scrtcell : I cleaned on Jan 9th, checked for air leaks, could not find any, replaced both oxygen sensors and the PCV valve. The codes went away for three weeks, then came back. Same codes. I was doubtful that it was the mass air sensor because the engine runs fine. I have had the Mass air sensor fail on a Lincoln Town Car and the engine ran really bad, thats why I posted the question. I was still doubting the mass air sensor was setting the codes

in my experience its the most common codes a MAF will throw. people usually do everything you did before they even check the MAF. unfortunately, there is no checking a MAF. only way to check is to replace it.
