Hi, I'm looking at purchasing a 98 Tahoe 2dr LS model 4x4 with 81k on it. Car appears stock except for some larger (18") rims.

What is the difference between the LS & LT or Sport Models, good bad or different?

What can i expect to have to do as far as maintence is concered at that mileage?

What could I expect to average for gas mileage, and do i need to use premium fuel?

Anything specific to look for before buying?

Any advice is appriciated,

Mike

ls and lt are the trim levels. lt will have leather and ls will not.

LT is going to mean more features than LS.

mileage can be anyware from 12- 18 mpg.

im not sure on the gas, i used premium, but i think people are getting away with 87.

I use the recommended 87 octane gas for my 97 Tahoe LT. Using higher grades of gas is really just a waste of money unless you are using forced induction or have raised your compression. If you are stock you can just run 87 octane since that is what your owner's manual recommends.

I have a '99 (essentially the same as a 98) LT Z71 2dr w/ ~83k miles on it. 87 is recommended and I use it. It will knock very infrequently and a bottle of octate boost remedies it. I get 12.5 / 13 mpg in mostly surface street driving and get 17+ on long road trips. I had an issue twice in the first 5 years with clogged fuel injectors but not since. Brake design is poor on these vehicles, so expect to have fairly frequent brake maintenance. The only other time it left me stranded was when battery acid leaked onto some of the electical, which completely killed it. Hazzard lights wouldn't even come on. Otherwise it has been a great truck in the almost 10 years I've had it.
