Lifter knocking

Today I took my 2007 Tahoe to the dealership because of a knocking noise. They put it on the computer and said that the lifter for cylinder #6 had collapsed lifter and the cam shaft was damaged. I have no check engine light at all just the knocking. They quoted me $5,000 for the lifters and cam replacement. But suggested that I replace the engine. Has this happened to anybody else?

I just joined the forum but have had a 99' for 6 years. Have you tried Marvel Mystery? I have a similar problem and it is helping. Do you notice rough idle or power loss? I got the noise a few months ago and my mechanic told me to get rid of the SUV. As long as it isn't causing problems I will keep going with it. I have a few more suggestions if this doesn't help. Hope this helps. Please let us know what happens.

No there is no loss of power or rough idle. I will look up marvel mystery though. Thanks forbade info

The lifter problem is a known problem. The Fuel Management should be disabled when the work is done and do the lifters and cam. The lifters are different if Fuel Management is disabled. That is the time when the computer shuts down certain cylinders while at highway speed for fuel conservation. Lots of "search" threads about this.

Oh, they know all right. That's why the tech probably only spent 10 minutes diagnosing the problem. The cam being bad, if it is, can send metal through the engine. Need to have checked again by a qualified shop and get a second opinion. There will be no recall about this but you can contact GM and see if they will give you some relief. It does happen at times.

They don't play fair. I tried contacting Chevy and the acknowledge 1 issue I have but will not do anything about it.

You have to ask to speak to someone up the ladder with your complaint. Not saying you will get relief but you can't just give up after 1 try. Plus also, remember this, the engine is 8 model years old. The AFM engines have this problem. Did you do your research before the purchase?

The only research I did was the carfax. Should have done a little bit more

We have all been there. Live and learn. I have a 99' with a couple of issues. A guy at my old job bought one an has had zero issues. I guess it has to do with build date and previous owner. Not sure why.

Lots of problems with lots of rigs can be directly traced back to poor repair and maintenance decisions by the previous owner. I just bought my 02. The older couple that owned it bought it new from a local dealer and had all repair and maintenance done at the same dealer. I got all of those records. I have come about as close to having the best used vehicle purchase ever but I do know that something can happen at any time. It is what it is.

I've had it for about 4 months now and didn't have any issues untill about a month ago. Now it seems to quiet down after it warms up. And on top of the lifters the milage display goes in an out.

Sounds like 2 separate issues. Need to find a shop for an oil change and cut open the oil filter to check for metal to be sure. If happens only with cold start and goes away when warm, sounds like piston slap and that is another known noise problem but nothing to worry about. Again, do a search about piston slap and read the threads. It could still be the lifters though.

Well, maybe you can get a second opinion. The Marvel Mystery may help. I had an old 86' Caprice that had a similar problem. I ran for an additional 40,000 miles. It was crushed beyond repair in a car accident. I know you are afraid of a money pit, so am I. When I see the price of these new SUV's I think it is worth it. Do lots of research so you can make an educated decision. Pic raiderron's brain. Also see if you can find a reputable mechanic.

Yeah Im gonna try the marvel mystery before my next oil change. Yeah I know it's separate issue, just frustrated with the problems it is causing me.
