The key tumbler keeps falling inside the door. It's hard to see up in there.
I am pretty sure it started happening after I replaced the exterior handle a few years ago.

What actually holds it into place?

Thank you for the help on this.

There should be a "U" shaped clip that slips in to a slot on the backside of it after pushing in to the hole. Clip is gone. Or there is a threaded nut that attaches it from the back side.

The lock cylinder has a spring loaded plunger that keeps it in place. If the lock is "pushing" into the door handle then the plunger is bad or the handle is broken where the plunger engages. Either way you will have to remove the door handle to make a repair.

I removed the door handle and tumbler, and it looks like the tumbler must not have been seated all the way into the hole cavity to have the spring loaded plunger seat properly. I have it now seated correctly, so it should now stay in place.
Thank you for the help on this one!
