As spring approacheth, I often think of totally wasting money on a new hood.

My question to you gents is, steel or fiberglass?.. and also, once I get said hood, what can I expect from a body shop as far as painting it GMC black to match the rest of the vehicle?

Im just going for a simple hood. like 2" cowl style.
Unless you guys have seen a jaw-dropper for the 99 denali/escalade, I'd love to hear about it.

thanks for reading,
Pete

i got a quote on a steel cowl hood for my 96 tahoe and paint was around $700. $5?? for the hood and the rest for prep, paint, and putting it on the truck.

most fiberglass hoods i've seen need TONS of body shop work (tons of bondo, fiberglass work, and sanding to make them look smooth and so the gap is correct along the fenders) and depending on the hood if it ever gets slammed you'll crack the paint off of it.

now i will say i haven't delt with any full size chevy hoods, but i would expect them to be close to the same. and i'm really picky about how my body work turns out (took 2 years of classes.)

I'd stay away from the fiberglass hood unless you are going for weight reduction. They are too fragile and the paint is prone to cracking.

Body shops in my area have quoted me just under $300 to re-paint my hood. It doesn't need any body work, just sand, prime, and paint.

ok so it seems like 200-300$ should get this handled. I read last night about fibergalss hood, and you guys are saying the same things... cracks the paint, weak, but lighter.

I dont care about light. I want heavy and slow. :)

ok then. hopefully nothing breaks between now and hood time.
thanks for you input, guys.
