Instrument Cluster Problem

Ok I know there are a lot of instrument cluster posts, but I didn't find anything to fit my situation.

I have already fixed the dead missreading guages etc.

My problem is when I start my 03 Yukon XL my gauges don't power on. I have no trip computer/odometer or anything.

Once you start driving down the road the chime will ding and everything comes on. Sometimes this happens within a couple miles other times it takes about ten minutes.

It has been almost a year since I replaced the gauge motors so I do not think it has to do with that.

Any ideas?

You're talking every single display/gauge, not just the odometer/gear selector, right?

Yes every single gauge, and the odometer gear selector as well.

Unfortunately no warranty left on it.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but how can I open the instrument panel to change a burned out bulb? The one behind the oilpressure gague is in Valhalla.

I have a 2004 tahoe. I had this problem early on and the dealer did something with or replaced the ignition switch.

(Also there has been a recall on the instrument cluster that was extended to 75,000 miles. That problem was with the speedometer only though I believe...)

The Ingnition switch problem did exactly what you described, so I would start there. I just threw in the other incase you are under the 75,000 mile you may want to check on that also.

You know I thought of the ignition switch. I'm not sure but dont the keys have something in them to trigger what driver it is etc.?
The dash seems to respond better with my key versus my wifes. I was actually thinking the ignition switch.

Unfortunately I am past my 75000 miles..

Try swapping keys, I think the driver select is received from the remote keyless entry not the key (not 100% sure). You would have to check with the dealer. When they fixed mine I still had the same keys, they were not changed out with the switch.

Oh I guess that does make sense.
I did go out and look at it. It is really loose. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. I'm just looking for cheaper solutions.

Not sure what it cost to replace the ignition switch... I had it done while still under warranty.

Try blowing out the ignition switch (KEY HOLE) with some compressed air for a keyboard. A lot stuff finds it way in there!

Cool! I tried to pop it open but since it's plastic and probably expensive I didn't want to apply too much force. I'll take a look at it again. I hate missing lights like that. I replaced all the controls on the steering wheel today because of missing lights.
