I have heard this from lots of people but no one ever seems to have a good answer for why. Can someone shed some light on this for me. In my 2001 Mercury Cougar (daily driver) I run it down "0" miles till empty on pretty much every tank. It has a 15 gallon tank and I put 14.5 gallons in it almost every time. The car has 106,000 mile on it and has had ZERO issue with it other than people running in to it. In the '07 Yukon it usually stays above 1/4 tank.
the reason being is the electric fuel pump in the tank is cooled by the gas....run it low & the pump will run hot, shortening the life of the pump.
Excellent answer, I guess that is to say that at a certain low point the pump is no longer completely submerged? Another reason I've always thought is that the sediment in the tank will be in higher concentration with little fuel, and it will pick up and clog the fuel filter faster. True but I have to say that a newer vehicle probably doesn't have a whole lot of gunk in there since it's still a newer system.
FYI: The 2007 Tahoe uses a returnless on demand type fuel injection system.
