Hi to all;
We currently have a 07 Tahoe 5.3-LT/2 2wd. Found a real, real good deal on a 2012 Z-71 2wd.
Ok so here is question current Tahoe has 3.42 rear gear and new tahoe has 3.08 rear gear. How much difference is this in both normal driving and getting on it driving?

Thanks to all who respond!
Dave

Welcome to the neighborhood!

I have moved the thread and as for your question, the difference in gearing will make a difference in the "seat of the pants" feel, but overall not that big. They more than likely did te change in gearing to help improve mileage, but the engine in the '12 should be producing slightly more torque than the '07 so it may be a trade off that you barely notice. the best way to tell is simply test driving it and see if you can tell a big difference.

Thanks for the Move.......
I guess that's about what I was thinking....I did think it strange that a Z71 would have that tall of a gear????? And it has trailering pkg.

There is a HD towing package with the 3.42 ratio, which will include the engine and trans coolers, and a two speed transfer case on the 4WD model. There is a significant difference in towing capacity with the gears and coolers compared to the 3.08 ratio. They all have class III hitches. I just didn't want you to confuse the two.
Also, with the six speed trans with a lower first gear, they can lower the ratio for better mileage and still maintain the acceleration from a stop.

If you aren't going to use this tahoe for any heavy towing, you wouldn't need them. With the 3.08 you are good up to 5500lb. trailer weight, and with the HD towing with the coolers and 3.42, up to 8500lb, in the 2WD model. Hope that helps some.

I was told the trucks were switched to a standard rear end of 3.08 at the same time they were switched to a 6 speed transmission. So it is essentially the same thing when being compared. Thats why the heavy duty tow package is now just a 3.42. So it should feel about the same to you.
