ok, so i was out of town a couple of weeks ago when my 2003 tahoe lost all power(sorta like it was skipping)and the check engine light started flashing. took it to advanced auto to have the meter put on it and it read " random misfire" after some debate, decided to drive it home....same thing--light flashing and it spitting and sputting....kick the gas and the light came on and stayed on and it would level out. Soon was back doing the same thing. took it to my mechanic who put another code reader on it and it said--"random misfire and performance shift off" Was told the tranny wiring harness and three sensors were bad. have changed that--still getting "random misfire"....have replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter and have checked the coil packs.....it's not any of those things !!! Please help!!! I have spent much to much money on a car i have only had for 2 months and now my mechanic is even at a loss. What's causing it to run so ragged and have a "random misfire" message.

ok so we did another test of the coil packs and they are definitely good.....changed the four right side injectors and still having some issues.....when you first crank it, it skips and the check engine light comes on.....kick it and the light becomes solid and it'll run great as long as you want to go, shut it off and it starts all over again... Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe check the throttle position sensor if it has one. Replacement on a Jeep Liberty solved that very same problem.

Check the cats. Unbolt the exhaust from the manifold and see how it runs. I had a cat go bad on bank 1 and I had random cyl misfires on bank 1. Lots of issues associated with it and a lot of wasted diagnosing trying to solve it, hoping it was something else.
Anyhow I have a thread describing it with pics.

If that doesn't work, possibly clean the MAF and around the throttle body opening. Use the specifically made cleaners for it. My 03 Tahoe rode off and on like bull and would sometimes shut off. Other times run ok then start dancing again. I bought the 2 sprays and cleaned up the 2 areas and the dang thing drove like new. (find it on youtube)

What about the plug wires? Check the operation of oxygen sensors. If they are not cycling correctly the system is in a constant adapting mode.
