Hey guys,
I just got a '07 LT3 Z71 Tahoe and I had a question about gas mileage. Chevy CLAIMS 15city and 21hwy but I'm not getting anything even remotely close to that. I'm getting about 11 and 17, respectively. I'm a little upset that this difference is so big, but I wanted to see if anybody else was getting that bad of mileage. I've heard good and bad milege from them but just wanted to see what everybody else's "real world" gas was.
Thanks,
dolphmiller

you can't go by the window sticker estimated MPG. the way that they come up with the numbers is from an outdated test from back in the 70's. The government needs to come up with a more realistic testing system for today's driving needs and vehicles. consumer reports recently had an article about it. sorry I cant remember the exact issue, but within the past year.

My mileage

Don't feel bad - got almost 4K on mine now (got in Feb '07) and only getting 13.9 MPG. I do mostly city-type driving. I have yet to take a long trip to test the highway section. If you look through previous threads, you will various ranges, some say depending on gears, etc.

I previously had a '97 Tahoe - what an amazing difference in 10 years! Gas was only $2.18/gal when I bought it - been as high as $3.79/gal and back down to $3.06/gal yesterday, just outside of Chicago.

Anyway, welcome - lots of good info on these and other forums around.

I get between 17 and 21. It's all about rpm management and overall smoothness of driving. Slowing down will help and avoid using too much brake....try letting off the gas to do most of your slowing. In your case...you have a new vehicle....so it's not broke in yet.

Well I definitely feathered the accelerator during the break-in period and I got the same mileage as I do now, now that I drive normally. Maybe its just not meant to be!

Actually...it helps to break in the motor at 75mph for long periods of time. Maybe you need to start taking more road trips. Feathering it during breakin..will not produce enough heat to properly break the motor in. Also...medium to hard accelerations around town and on the freeway will help the motor break in properly. A combination of these two things is best and will ensure proper engine break in. Gas mileage will improve over time.

Funny, that's EXACTLY what most engine manufacturers tell you NOT to do during break-in. By running it at the same RPM for long periods of time you don't seat the rings as well as if you let the motor have a good range of temperature and rpm.

To the OP - the numbers on the sticker are the EPA figures not GM's. Chevy doesn't CLAIM the truck gets any mileage. The Federal Government mandates and conducts the tests and requires the manufacturers to post the numbers.

It's not a perfect measure by any stretch and the EPA is changing it for 2008 most numbers will go down.

No it's not funny..I said a COMBINATION of these two things......medium to hard accelleration around town and on the hiway and then long periods at hiway speed. I know how to break one in ...do you? Lets put my 04' stock Tahoe up against what you got on the line and see who did a better job with break in.

Actually you completely contradicted yourself in the original post. Re-read your post - you say long periods of 75mph driving. Then you say hard acceleration. So which is it?

Here's one of the best threads I've seen on engine break-in from Corvette Forum.

And how exactly would you like to compare the break-in between my not exactly stock anymore Tahoe and yours? :confused2:
