gas gauge not working 2001 tahoe

I got my 2001 tahoe a couple months ago and all i needed to do was change the fuel pump to get it running. Now it runs great with no computer codes but my fuel level guage isnt working. It stays at empty even when om driving. Recently it started doing this thing where when i get in the truck and turn the power on, the needle still wont move but when i take the key out the power stays on unless i open the door. 30 seconds after i take the key out, if i dont open the door, the gas guage starts working. As soon as i put the key in the ignition though, the gas gauge goes back to empty
