The sending unit and pump were replaced a couple of years ago, after then the gauge always moved and just a few days ago it started going haywire spining around like crazy, could a wire have been pinched or something??

I just replaced my fuel pump (again) this time with with oem unit. aftermarket sending unit burned up the contacts at the resistor in the tank.
Now I have the same problem as you. Gauge spins and goes nuts when I turn on the truck.
I was told it could be the stepper motor that turns the needle or the pcm.:(

I dont know of any tests to confirm just swap and hope :(

don't swap anything its obviously true the stepper motor in your gauge cluster is bad its not that costly to replace it probably 50$ at the most at the dealer or an electrical shop will probably charge about 38$ to rebuild the whole cluster (Which is what i would do)
