You'll get mixed responses from everywhere. AFAIC, you'd need the muffler. The muffler would have to be single in dual out. Dual out reason is to match OEM.

are you putting on a catback or just the muffler?

i just put on flowmasters american thunder 50 series catback PN 17419 for my 05 yukon and it comes with everything you need.

all you need as far as tools is a hacksaw or preferrably a sawzall and a couple of socket wrenches and ramps or a jack and jackstands. i did mine in the garage in about 2-1/2 hours. the toughest part is removing the old exhaust but i just had the dealer replace my y pipe and cats so it came off easily, no rusted bolts to deal with.

Go with a muffler by itself. The factory piping is more than big enough to handle most bolt on mods, and it's stainless steel. Until you start pushing some serious power to the wheels (read: forced induction), you won't need to replace the piping.

Here's a vid of Caddis' tahoe with a 50 serious flowmaster muffler and stock piping to give you an idea:

Yukon_174 I'm running that exact system on mine. Here's the webpage on it:

You can download the directions in Adobe PDF format off that page and read through them. I couldn't tell you how good they are because I had a shop do mine. I was lacking the tools and probably couldn't trust myself with a hacksaw anyway.

Also I think whether or not people go with dual-exit or use OEM piping is based on preference. I knew that I could just swap out mufflers but I do like the the look of dual-exit.
