I recently bought a 1999 tahoe 4x4 with the 4l60e trans. When I bought it the guy said the 4wd did not work and the light for "service 4wd" was on.

Upon getting it home I look under and notice the front driveshaft is completely missing. However I'm not sure if I just need a driveshaft or any other parts? I took pics of both ends where the drive shaft should be.

Sorry I'm new to 4x4 this is my first. Thanks!

Hit up a junk yard, you need the driveshaft with front ujoint and straps/bolts, the rear ujoint with slip yoke.......
I would worry about the Tcase as it is open, check/ drain/ refill the fluid at least......

Thanks, I will check into how to change the fluid.
I've done some reading and have noticed I think I need a transfer case motor as well?

Yeah, if that motor is missing you need it for the TCase to shift..... :)

Well that is on hold now while I decide what to do. Been watching the coolent levels and today it was low. When I went to check the oil the dipstick was way milky and the radiator was half full.... Funny how it has been fine the 2 weeks ive owned it and today it decides to fill up with water...

This sucks =/

Bummer, park it. Change out the LIM gaskets with the newer style Felpro Perma Dry Plus gaskets (steel backer and rubber gasket old ones were hard plastic with a silicone bead).....

I agree with Lester on the engine. also, be prepared for a full rebuild in the not too distant future. The vortec crank bearings and heads don't hold up to water at all. If you've already made chocolate milk, you might be best off doing a refresh now (new bearings and master gasket set). Mine gave out about 4 months ago. I decided to do a refresh but found busted heads and a mess of other problems. I ended up doing a complete build. For your 4x4 issues, drain and refill the tcase, replace the shifter motor, the 4wd actuator (on the passenger side of the front pumpkin) and the driveshaft lester described. After that you should have no 4wd problems.

Yeah, I have a low mileage 99 block on the stand now that has been soaking in Diesel for awhile before I bought it, I picked it up to prepare to replace my 300k mile cracked block in my current truck...... If you caught it early enough you may be ok for a while, be shure to put some cheap oil in it, run it a bit, drain it and repeat to flush as much crap out as you can.....

I too bought a 99 Tahoe back in December and upon inspecting the truck I noticed the front drive shaft was missing. I figured what the heck... so I pulled the 4x4 fuse and drove it 3 hours back home. (it was a good buy)

So fast forward 3 months and now I am curious as to what needs to be done for repair.
I dropped the 4x4 fuse back in the fuse box, and with the truck in neutral I can press the 4HI button and the light will flash twice, t-case motor tries to engage then returns back to the 2HI position on the switch. when I press the 4LO button it sounds as if the actuator below moves but then resorts back to 2HI, and sometimes 4HI. Auto 4x4 will stay lit upon pressing the button, also sounds as if the t case moved to its position. I now have a Service 4X4 light on the dash. If I crawl under the truck and manually spin the front output shaft of the T case it is still locked in 4x4 in all scenarios , but the 2HI indicator light is on. I clamped my gopro under the truck to video the front output shaft and it is for sure spinning in all switch positions.

I understand I need the front drive shaft to make this fully testable, but why would my t-case be locked in 4x4? I'm not trying to just throw parts at it for repair, but check all the obvious items first. Are there any test procedures to rule out bad components/switches? I have jostled the wiring to rule out crap connections, yet found no corrosion or pin discoloration. It is a 136GM by New Process Gear if that helps paired with a 4L60E trans.
also how can you read the transfer case codes on a 99? there is no pin 13 on the DLC to ground so you can count the lights flashing on the switch indicator lights.

Any help is appreciated!!!

Thanks
Andy.

Either TCASE is toast, or encoder motor is...... IMHO.... could also have a bad TCASE controller.
