Forgive me if this has been covered in the past, but I need to replace the 6 disc changer factory head unit in my '04 Tahoe (with Bose). I can't load CDs and some of the lights are out on the buttons.

I asked the dealer what was involved in replacing and my service rep said that they would put in a new unit and flash it or reprogram it if I was to provide the unit. He said he couldn't warranty it obviously because it would be a used head unit, but that it would cost me about $100.00 to have them put it in and re-program it if I was to provide the unit.

The reason that I want to go with the factory HU is because I want to keep the OnStar/XM integrated, as well as the steering wheel controls, and the Bose system sounds good enough for how I listen to my music. My question is, can I simply put it in myself, or do I need the dealer to re-program? I have an OBDII scanner, is it something I can do myself? Is the serial number somehow tied to the VIN? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

There are places that specialize in fixing the Bose equipment. I've Googled a couple on the internet. It might be better to have yours repaired if you want to keep your Tahoe factory stock. Pulling the radio out of the dash is a snap (literally).

Well, my thought was, I found a stock Bose equiped deck for $100.00 in working condition, and my dealer will charge me $100.00 to re-program if needed. The stereo shops in town want $350.00-400 to fix my old one, so I figured it better to go the replacement route rather than repair for the same outcome. I guess I was just wondering before I pulled the old one whether or not I'd need to get it re-coded or whatever...

You can install it yourself, but the dealer will still need to clear the VIN number from the used unit.

Ok, yeah, that's what I thought. There's no way to do it with an OBDII scanner?
