About 30,000 miles ago, my trans failed because the connection at the ECU's harness got corroded and the trans didn't get a clean signal to raise the line pressure, so I lost third and fourth. My trans guy and I figured this out, cleaned the connectors and added dielectric grease. It was fine for a while, but I just lost 3rd and 4th again.
He warranteed the trans, drove it around with a gauge on it and saw everything normal. I'm installing a permanent gauge as soon as weather permits.
He also suggested replacing the ECU and getting one with firmer shift points. Anyone do this? Where should I begin? Is it only a chip or does the entire ECU get reprogrammed?

First of all, it is a little unusual to have corrosion on the pins of the ECU. Was this truck in a flood at one point, or under water?

The ECU needs to be swapped out. Not a big deal but it needs to be programmed for your vehicle. The GM dealer should be able to program the new ECU.

Another option is to install a stand alone trans controller. That is what I have done and it works great. It requires spending a little time getting to know the new computer, but is easily programmed with a laptop.

I have had to do the stand alone trans control to protect the trans. I have OBD1 in my truck and it is too difficult to do transmission adjustments.

The TCU allows me to set shift firmness and speeds plus separate control of the lockup. The TCU has force motor tables for controlling shifting for normal driving and rpm based shift settings for WOT.

I have had a trans pressure gauge, mounted on the windshield post for years. It comes in handy.

The truck was never under water. It has 224,000 miles on it. I guess maybe the seals dried up a little or something.
I got a reman'd ECU the other day for 150. The dealer wants 105 to flash it. I'm not real computer savvy, so the trans computer is probably not an option.

Sounds like you are close to being back together. I would look closely at the condition of the plugs before installing the new ECU. It might be worth it to take a look at the plug on the transmission end as well. Good luck.

Truck's back together with the original ECU. I've been driving it for a week and so far it's fine. I checked the harness at both ends.
Thanks for the tips, looks like we're on the same page.

another option for firmer shift is b&m makes something. i had one in my yukon and it worked great. firmer shifts and you can adjust it. dont know what it was called but was made by b&m. can adjust from normal med shift and firm shift with a 3way toggle. was just a little box that you wired into the comp. i will see if i can find one online and paste the link.

That link is showing me a deep pan and fluid, but I'll find what you're talking about. Thanks for the tip.
