Do the new style TPS work with the Tire Monitor on these trucks?

I just got my parents a deal on some 20" LTZ takeoff wheels for my mom's 05 Tahoe since she needed tires. I was under the impression that the new style tire pressure sensors would work with these old body style trucks, but after I put the wheels on the sensors wouldn't learn to the truck. I know the sensors are working because the tire monitor tool was reading the correct pressure I set the tires at and because the wheels came off a 2009 truck with 2 miles on it. Has anyone been able to use the new sensors with an old by style truck? I'm wondering if maybe there is more than one of these new sensors and some don't work with the older trucks.
