I own a 1999 Tahoe 2-door. When I start it cold, the ABS dash warning light turns on 'bright' for 2-3 seconds, then dims significantly and stays lit the entire time the engibe is on.

There is only one fault code for some type of 'swtich' fault a mechanic said who scanned it.

The other day I was doing around 40 MPH and had to panic stop, hitting the brake hard and steady until stopping - the tires did not seem to lock up and there was no skidding noise or smoke from the tires.

Should I be concerned. I saw a 2005 Recall on ABS sensor corrision prolems on the Tahoe - do they (GM) still honor that and do work so late?:sad72:

Had the same problem, went to local repair shop, they scanned it with tech 2 scanner. Had a lots of abs errors, but most was about right ABS sensor. Replace it, the contact plate on it was corroded. After replacement never saw the warning lamp again. Gave about 25 bucks for it.

Thanks for the info Arcane - - - my mechanic said the speed sensor was built into the bearings and would cost about $380 plus labor to replace - just doing both sensors would cost over $1000.00 = is that what you experienced?

Whaaaaatttt??????? :mfr_omg::mfr_omg::mfr_omg:

Speed sensor bolts into the hub bearing and it costs about 20-30 bucks.
Here it is:

Idk if you have 2 wheel drive, i've got 4wd and i bougt ac delco sensor 19181882 and replaced it by myself. I don't trust local mechanics anymore after i paid 500$ and they did nothing.

Speed sensors

Thanks for the info - I know nothing about speed sensors...think my mechanic is trying to make some $ off me.

Yes, my '99 Tahoe has 4-wheel drive also.

So, how many speed sensors are there and where do they mount?

Could you give me a few more details having done it yourself - I would appreciate it.

I went to Rockauto.com and saw they had a left and right hand sensor.

Thanks...:welcome:

You've got 3 sensors, 2 in front hubs and 1 in transfer case. Usually the front ones are dead cos of corrosion or impact. So just buy 19181882 and 19181880 and replace it. If you gonna do it by yourself, i could tell you how. I have a guy selling those loacally, but i'm to far from you, shipping cost gonna be like hell.

Well...I will give it a try!

I ordered AC Delco Speed Sensors for both sides - will get them installed and see what happens...will let you know.

Thanks...

Well...had my mechanic install new AC Delco right and left ABS wheel sensors today...did not resolve the problem.

Dim ABS Dash Warning Light still illuminated.

No ABS codes.

Any more ideas...?:smokin:

Do you have any abs trouble codes in history?
Possible it's an electrical problem, like a bad ground or so. Check connectors near the abs block.
And what did you use to read the errors? Some scanners don't read GM abs errors at all.

Hi all...

A year and a half later - still having the problem after replacing both front hub sensors...

Though now when I start it cold, the ABS dash warning light turns on 'bright' for 2-3 seconds, then dims significantly and stays lit for about 5 minutes until I reach operating temperature - then the light stays off for as long as the engine is 'hot'. When it cools down and I re-start...the cycle repeats itself.

Any new ideas?

Oh...and in answer to the previous question - the system is still NOT throwing any ABS codes into the computer.

Bad ABS module. Lamp driver circuit has a slight short to it I would suspect... assuming you checked all your grounds and such.....
