New to the forum and need some help. I have a '95 Tahoe (bought new) that is showing what I suspect are the symptoms of a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor. I thought it was the starter because of the grinding sound it made when it was started. I replaced the starter because being from the older generation that was the syptoms of a bad starter (no I didn't test it). I had never heard of a CSPS until now and started doing some research.
Now after replacing the starter I noticed when started the vehicle idles higher then normal but within a few seconds returns to a normal idle. I re-started several times and syptoms were the same and even shut off twice by itself.
Question - does this year have a CSPS and if so where is it located?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Nope, Vortec engine 96+...

The sound yours is making is similar to the sound my 95 makes...... from the sounds of it...... Might check and see if you need to install a shim or two.....

Welcome to the neighborhood!

No, your truck doesn't have a CSPS, it has a distributor. I would go get some carb cleaner and while it is running spray a light spray around the intake manifold and vacuum lines, etc. It sounds to me like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere in the mix.

Ok thanks guys. Glad thats not the problem because from what I have read that can cause some serious problems if not corrected.

lesterl - where would you put the shims?

clkelley - yes I agree a vacuum leak could be one of my problems. This vehicle has had a sporadic surging idle for sometime and haven't been able to track it down. It just seemed extremely higher yesterday after replacing the starter and it has never cut off before. May be it was a coincidence?

Thanks again for your help.

Shims available at parts store.....

Shims go between starter and block. (they are spacers to push the starter further away from the flexplate.) They should come in a pack with a few different sizes.
