I don't think there is a way to safely restrain a large dog without tranquilizing it and tying it down for the ride. I'm talking about safety to the dog not passengers. The crate idea is great for keeping passengers safe, but the dog will still die in that severe of a collision. The way I see it, we drive Tahoes and that is at least a fighting chance in that kind of collision. The only way I could see my dog actually flying into the windshield is if it was jumping high enough to bring her center of gravity over the rear seat exactly when the collision happened. Much more likely is a rollover, but I have much more serious problems at that point. Just my 2c

agreed.
i also drive like a granny when i have my pup in the back.. for now i've just flipped up the third row seats and laid a couple blankets.
eventually i want to have a liner (i'm not cutting the liner - since i'm only using it with the seats out for the dog) maybe there'd be a way to fab in a safety strap for one of those pet harnesses in the back? either way i would hate to be in an accident; however, i doubt i'd personally be in one that would be my fault, roll over, or front end -- so my concern is the pup in the back; however, at that point i'm also pretty sure that because it's a tahoe he'd be fine.. anything that's going to do significant damage to hurt the dog by a rear end collision is probably enough to hurt the dog and me regardless of his location, and/ or being strapped in or not.
